The "Chopper" Raises Awareness and Funds for Revolution Kids

Enner shows off the Chopper as it is being worked on!

Participants in the winter program, not only learned the lessons of bike repair, they had a special project to complete. That project was constructing a "chopper" style bike under the direction of Corporal Craig Medley. This project was done with a very specific purpose in mind, to raise awareness about the Revolution Kids program and to generate some revenue to keep the program running.
The Chopper was auctioned off at the April 9th Rock & Roast, annual fundraiser, for the Box of Rain Foundation. The third item up on the auctioning block it created quite a buzz as it was ridden in by RK participant. Bidding began at $50 and did not stop until the new owner had spent $375 for the "priceless" piece of work. But that was not the end of the bidding, the new owner quickly put it back on the auction block so a second owner could be chosen. Again, the bike brought in $375. Just do the math $750 going straight back to the Revolution Kids Program! The current owner, as gracious as the first, has agreed to allow the program to keep it on loan, so the bike can be displayed as part of the Revolution Kids first bike sale event, being held as part of the Quiet Waters Park Earth Day Celebration.

Participants Begin Working on Their Own Bikes

The bike shop is humming with a new excitement. What is happening now? The participants have all chosen the bike they will work on to make their own at the end of all completed volunteer hours. The kids now know the names of all the tools, where they belong on the bench, and how to use them  to tune up their bike. Bike Shop staff, volunteers, and participants are at the helm for making this project an early on success!
